Standup9ja: Police vow clampdown as IPOB plans attack on
campaign rallies ahead of Anambra polls
The police in Anambra State vowed serious consequences on
any attempt to foment trouble ahead of the November 18 governorship election in
the state.
It comes amidst repeated threats by the Indigenous People of
Biafra(IPOB) to boycott the election as well as alleged plot to attack
political rallies in the State.
Standup9ja gathered that the alleged plot was part of the
group’s plans to cause apathy in the poll, which was manifested at the weekend
in Odoekpe, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
A group of youths suspected to be members of the Indigenous
People of Biafra had allegedly disrupted a church function attended by a
governorship aspirant in Anambra State on the platform of the Progressives
People’s Alliance, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo.
"I am deeply concerned because these people want to
start now to instill fears in the minds of the people in order to cause voter
apathy in that election," the source said.
According to the source, the development may compel the
Federal government to flood the state with army and police which may result to
indiscriminate shooting of innocent citizens, thereby forcing them to stay
indoors during the election.
But the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, Umar Garba,
after a meeting with other security agencies in the state, issued a statement,
saying it would not hesitate to deal decisively with any individual or groups
under any guise that will disrupt public peace.
It warned any group nursing such plans to perish the idea or
be ready to be visited with the heavy arm of the law.
“It is to be noted the Governorship Election has been
scheduled for November, 2017 by the body responsible for elections in Nigeria
and that is the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC); and is the
only competent authority that can make any pronouncement regarding the conduct
of elections,” the statement said.
