Standup9ja: Task
force to arrest Anambra “baby dumpers”
Idemili north local
government area of Anambra has a problem—indiscriminate dumping of corpses of
newborn babies.
Chairman of the
council areas transition committee, Raphael Nnabuife has threatened arrests for
suspects.
A special task force
has been set up to monitor improper refuse disposal of refuse bins in the area,
and prosecute in a sanitation court.
Addressing a meeting
of landlords associations, market leaders and All Progressives Grand Alliance,
APGA leaders from the area at the council secretariat, Nnabuife disclosed that
the task force have been deployed to all nooks and crannies in the area to
carry out the assignment with all seriousness it deserves.
He described the act
as immorality and environmental pollution, particularly when the babies or
other refuse bins are dumped without tying the bag containing the body or
refuse, to make it easier for the environmental workers to pick them up.
The council boss also
warned that the task force team who might either be in uniform or mufti would
arrest scavengers who open or untie such tied bags containing the refuse bins
in search of valuable items to sell, thus scattering the bins.
"Inasmuch as I
am not against scavenging, anyone who wishes to scavenge should go to the final
waste disposal sites located at either
Nkwelle-Ezunaka or Owerri road, Onitsha and do the scavenging,” he stated.
Responding, the
chairman of Nkpor Central landlords Association, Frank Obi; Secretary of Old
Motor Spare Parts Asssociation, David Eze and Chairman of United Stockfish
Dealers Association, Dennis Anyaduba, commended
the council boss for kick-starting enlightenment campaign aimed at
ensuring environmental cleanliness in the area and urged him not to relent.
