Standup9ja: ECOWAS, AU, UN urge dialogue on Cote d’Ivoire
mutiny
The Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS),
African Union and the United Nations have condemned the recent mutiny in Cote
d’Ivoire, saying the action by the soldiers threatened to exacerbate social
tension and undermine successful
economic re-launch of the country.
The three bodies, in a joint statement, urged the use of
dialogue and legal channels as the sole means for the resolving disputes.
They gave the advice after a visit to Cote d’Ivoire against
the backdrop of a revolt that paralysed the country for four days.
Soldiers in Bouake, the epicentre of the uprising and Ivory
Coast’s second largest city, withdrew into their bases on Tuesday after
reaching an agreement with the government on bonus payments.
A joint high level mission comprising the President of
ECOWAS Commission, Marcel de Souza, Senior Minister and Secretary General in
the Office of the President of Guinea, Kiridi Bangoura, representative of the
AU Chairperson, Prof. Alpha Condé and the Special Representative of the United
Nations Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Mohamed Ibn Chambas,
was received by President Alassane Ouattara.
The mission expressed its total support for Ouattara.
