Standup9ja: Boko Haram, Over 26 Customs Officers killed in
Borno, Yobe
The Comptroller, Nigerian Customs, Borno/Yobe area command
Mr. Angbalaga Jesse Joshua says the Insurgency in the northeast has seriously
affected the activities of the command in discharging its duty effectively.
Mr Angbalaga lamented the lack of functional economic border
in Borno and Yobe states, on Wednesday, when he hosted members of the press in
his office in Maiduguri.
According to him, the command has lost over 26 officers and
men as a result of the insurgency in the northeast, particularly in Borno
state.
He added that there are only two functional borders out of
13 in the axis.
According to him, the border at Gaidam in Yobe state is
functional while the one in Borno is functioning skeletally.
Angbalaga said unless the Nigerian military finally crush
the Boko Haram insurgency to free Borno state particularly, affected economic
borders across Borno and Yobe states would remain close.
Also lamenting on lack of compensation for Custom officers
killed during insurgency, Angbalaga said although the Nigerian Custom ensures
that its officers and men are insured, they have been ignored when it comes to
special compensation as the case in other agencies.
Speaking on the need for training and retraining of its
officers and men, the comptroller said the National Open University of Nigeria
(NOUN) has opened more opportunities for working class to get educated and he
has been encouraging his men to take that opportunity.
