Standup9ja: Attacks; Staff, students threaten closure of
UniMaid
From Ibrahim Sawab, Maiduguri
The University of Maiduguri chapters of the Student Union
Government (SUG), Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic
Staff Union (NASU) and other staff unions have in a joint press conference in
Maiduguri called on the Federal Government to immediately take all the
necessary measures to provide effective security measures and equipment to
protect the lives and properties of the university community or face closure of
the institution.
The joint unions warned, “For the avoidance of doubt, if
no immediate action is taken to
protect our members, we shall be
compelled to call our congresses to consider taking drastic action which would not auger well to
our students and their parents. We wish to categorically state that we would
not guarantee the reopening of university of Maiduguri for the 2017/2018
academic session in October 2017 if the Federal Government fails to meet our
reasonable demands.”
The spokesman of the joint unions and Chairman of ASUU Chapter of the
university who led other Chairmen of the unions to the press conference at the
NUJ Press Center Maiduguri, Dr. Dani Mamman, accused the Federal Government of
insensitivity, saying not even the Minister of Education had deemed fit to
visit the university or send delegation to commiserate with the university over
the loss of lives arising from the suicide bombings. “No responsible and
serious government would display such glaring insensitivity and neglect of
responsibility as we have seen,” he said.
