Standup9ja - Wearing Customs Uniform Will Belittle Hameed
Ali’s Military Achievements – David Jemibewon
Former Governor of the defunct Western State and retired Major General of the Nigerian Army, David Jemibewon, has stated that wearing Customs Uniform to appear before the Senate will belittle the achievements of the Customs DG, Hameed Ali.
The ongoing face-off between the Customs boss and the Senate has been well publicized recently and this has caused Gen. Jemibewon to speak out.
Hameed Ali, a retired colonel, has not been seen in Customs uniform since he was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, causing confrontation between him and senators who have demanded that he appears before them in hius full customs regalia next week or face serious consequences.
According to the retired general, the senators demand was unnecessary. Speaking to reporters in Abuja yesterday, He said “We tend to create controversy where there ought not to be controversy. In a situation we are today, we should not be focusing on wearing a uniform.”
He went further to describe the Customs Director-General, as a fine military man who should not belittle himself with Customs uniform.
“It would be belittling the position of the uniform of a member of the Armed forces.”
Jemibewon, who also served as former Minister of Police Affairs under President Olusegun Obasanjo, said he would have resigned if anyone had compelled him to wear police uniform as a minister.
“There was no way anybody could have compelled me to wear uniform. I would have resigned. Even if the law said so I would have resigned.”
