Standup9ja - How Ngwuta acquired 2 passports – NIS
A senior officer of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS)
yesterday narrated how suspended Supreme Court Justice Sylvester Ngwuta
acquired two valid international passports.
Ngwuta is facing a 16-count charge bordering on use of
multiple travel passports, false age declaration, money laundering and other
financial crimes filed against him by the federal government’s representatives.
A Deputy Comptroller of Immigration in the Benue State
Command, Tanko Nuhu Kutana, said Justice Ngwuta was issued an international
passport on Nov 29, 2012 with an expiry date of Nov 29, 2017.
Led in evidence by Olufemi Fatunde, the forensic analyst
said the judge complained of the loss of the passport and was issued a new one
on April 20, 2016 to expire on April 4, 2021.
He said the DSS recovered both passports from Ngwuta’s house
during the raid of October 8, 2016. Under cross examination by the defence
counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), Kutana admitted that the judge did not
interchangeably use the passports, including his diplomatic passport as he
earlier claimed in his statement to the DSS.
Agabi applied to tender the earlier statement by the witness
which was admitted in evidence. Justice John Tsoho adjourned the case to April
16 for hearing.
